TSUN Case Study | 80kW Solar + Storage Project Lands in Gansu: Microinverters & ESS Solve Roof Safety and Shading Challenges for High-Rise Residences

Can solar and energy storage systems (ESS) be effectively deployed on high-rise residential roofs in China? An 80kW solar + 60kWh storage project in Wuwei, Gansu, provides the perfect answer.

Located on the roof of a newly built residential complex, this project utilizes TSUN MX3300D high-power microinverters and the DCU2000 Lite DC energy storage system. Combined with three-phase zero-export control, it achieves a mode of "self-consumption with zero grid injection." Expected to generate 110,000 to 130,000 kWh annually, the project provides green power for public areas such as underground garages, property management offices, and street-facing shops. It not only reduces public electricity costs but also serves as a replicable solar+storage practice model for green building construction in high-rise residences.

01 Project Implementation: 80kW Solar + 60kWh Storage

Located in Wuwei City, Gansu Province, this distributed solar project was built to support a newly developed residential community. It fully utilizes the roof space, deploying the system across multiple independent roof areas, with a total installed capacity of approximately 80kW.

The project is equipped with 23 TSUN MX3300D microinverters, paired synchronously with a 60kWh energy storage system. The system adopts a three-phase grid-tied architecture operating in a "self-consumption, zero grid export" mode, ensuring stable operation via three-phase zero-export control. From the residential roofs to the underground garages, and from the property offices to the shops along the street, this project makes the community's public electricity consumption green, systematic, and manageable.

02 Why Microinverters? Safer and More Suitable for Complex Roofs

For high-rise residential roof projects, safety, shading, and Operation & Maintenance (O&M) are far more critical considerations than sheer equipment costs. This project is distributed across multiple independent roof areas, with local shading from crossbeams on site. The TSUN MX3300D features module-level MPPT control, allowing each solar panel to operate independently. This restricts shading impacts to a localized area, making it highly suitable for complex roof environments.

Simultaneously, the MX3300D features a module-level low-voltage input design. With the DC side voltage remaining under 60V, it significantly mitigates the risks of high-voltage DC arcing, fire hazards, and electrical shocks during maintenance. Its "6-in-1" design allows a single unit to connect up to six high-power modules, effectively reducing equipment quantity, simplifying wiring, and maximizing roof space utilization.

03 Microinverter + ESS: Maximizing Green Energy Efficiency

In residential public electricity scenarios, solar power must not only generate electricity stably but also improve local consumption rates. The addition of an energy storage system allows surplus daytime electricity to be stored and discharged during peak usage hours or periods of insufficient sunlight. This boosts the solar self-consumption rate, enhances power supply stability, and further optimizes public electricity costs.

This project is paired with an approximately 60kWh energy storage system. The first two small-scale sub-stations are each equipped with a DCU2000 Lite DC energy storage all-in-one unit, providing a storage capacity of about 6kWh per station. The third sub-station is equipped with a 48kWh energy storage system, primarily serving public electricity scenarios such as the property management office and street-level shops.

Through the synergy of "Microinverter + ESS," the project seamlessly matches the load demands of the underground garage, offices, and shops. It achieves local green power consumption, load balancing, and peak shaving and valley filling, allowing clean energy to truly serve the daily operations of the community.

04 Long-Distance Communication: Stable Three-Phase Zero-Export

The project employs a three-phase grid-tied architecture, combined with RS485 communication, centralized DTU data acquisition, and three-phase zero-export smart meters to achieve real-time three-phase zero-export control, ensuring "self-consumption, zero grid export."

The smart meters on site are dispersed, with the longest communication distance exceeding 100 meters. Despite the complex residential power distribution environment, the TSUN microinverter system maintains stable communication and dynamic power regulation, ensuring the continuous and reliable operation of the zero-export function. Meanwhile, relying on the TSUN intelligent O&M platform, maintenance personnel can check the operational status of modules and microinverters in real time, swiftly pinpointing abnormal equipment and drastically improving post-installation O&M efficiency.

The successful implementation of this project further validates the significant advantages and promotional value of TSUN's Microinverter + ESS solution in high-rise residential scenarios. Addressing the core demands of residential settings—high safety standards, complex shading environments, scattered multi-area layouts, three-phase grid-tied control, and refined O&M management—TSUN has built a safe, reliable, highly efficient, and smartly managed residential solar+storage integration solution relying on its high-power microinverters, energy storage systems, and intelligent O&M platform.

In the future, TSUN will continue to deepen its focus on high-power microinverters, micro-storage, and solar+storage integration technologies. The company aims to provide safe, efficient, and intelligent clean energy systems for residential, public building, and C&I (commercial and industrial) applications, empowering the energy upgrade of buildings and accelerating the transition to a green, low-carbon lifestyle.
